# ChromaChecker Instruments Bridge — installing it before the store listing

Two halves, in this order. Ten minutes, no administrator password.

The extension is not in the Chrome Web Store yet, so it is loaded from a
folder. That is the only way Chrome allows: a packaged `.crx` from anywhere
but the store is refused outright, so "developer mode" here is the ordinary
route, not a workaround.

## 1. The helper, for your instrument

Download the one for your computer and run it.

It installs for your user only — nothing lands in Applications or Program
Files, and you will not be asked for a password. One installer covers all
supported instruments: X-Rite i1Display and i1Pro 2/3, Calibrite ColorChecker
Studio, Konica Minolta MYIRO-1.

On an Intel Mac the package will refuse to install. That is deliberate — it
would install and then not run. An Intel build is coming.

## 2. The extension

1. Unzip `extension.zip` somewhere you will not delete by accident. Chrome
   reads this folder every time it starts; move it later and the extension
   disappears.
2. Open `chrome://extensions`.
3. Turn on **Developer mode**, top right.
4. **Load unpacked**, and choose the unzipped `extension` folder.
5. Check the id shown underneath reads:

       jbgdbclhhekpogejhokhfjgicghcpgaa

   (the Chrome Web Store's id, from 0.7.1 on). If it differs, the folder was
   modified — download it again rather than continuing, because the helper
   answers only that id and, during the move, the older
   `bpdoefpdphngggkhlemenbkfnnnlbdee` of extensions loaded before 0.7.1.

Edge and Brave work the same way, at `edge://extensions` and
`brave://extensions`.

## 3. Check it works

Open the Instruments page on a licensed ChromaChecker site. Near the top it
says which halves it can see — the extension version, and every helper it
found. Plug in an instrument, press **Connect**, then **Measure**.

## What you will see, and why

**"Disable developer mode extensions"** — Chrome nags about this on every
start, for any unpacked extension. It is not about this one in particular and
it goes away when the store listing is live. Dismissing it does not disable
anything.

**"This site is not licensed"** — the page you are on has no ChromaChecker
license. Correct behavior: the bridge answers licensed pages only, and an
internal copy of a page on another address is not licensed.

**"No helper found"** — step 1 did not happen, or the browser was already
running when it did. Restart the browser.

## Removing it

The extension: **Remove** on the extensions page. The helper: run
*Uninstall ChromaChecker Bridge.command* in
`~/Library/Application Support/ChromaChecker/InstrumentsBridge` on macOS, or
Settings → Apps on Windows. Nothing is left behind.

## What it does with your data

Nothing leaves your computer. The page asks the extension, the extension asks
the helper, the helper asks the instrument, and the numbers come back the same
way. No account, no upload, no analytics — the helper is not even permitted to
reach the network. Details: `privacy.html` beside this file, and
